What began in a backyard in 2000 has grown into one of Australia's leading producers of premium flowering plants. Founded by a passion for exceptional plants and a commitment to quality, Poplar Grove's journey started with a small leased site at Lonsdale in Adelaide's southern suburbs. By 2004 the site was operating at full capacity. It was clear that to continue growing, a larger home was needed. After an extensive search, a nine-acre property at Sellicks Beach, 45 minutes south of Adelaide, was purchased and development commenced in January 2007. Stage One included 450 metres of shedding, 1,500 metres of shade and tunnel structures, and 12,000 square metres of growing area. Just five months later, Poplar Grove proudly dispatched its first orders from the new site. The mild coastal climate of Sellicks Beach has proven ideal for growing hardy, low-maintenance flowering shrubs and vibrant perennial varieties. Working closely with leading breeders from around the world, we carefully select and trial the best genetics available, ensuring every variety delivers outstanding colour, performance, and garden appeal. Today, Poplar Grove produces around one million premium 150mm plants annually for the retail garden centre market. Our distinctive blue pots and professionally designed Elite labels have become recognised symbols of quality among gardeners and retailers alike. You'll find Poplar Grove plants in leading garden centres throughout Adelaide and regional South Australia, as well as across Victoria, Canberra, selected locations in New South Wales, and Toowoomba. Growth has continued steadily over the years. By 2026, the nursery spans 10 acres and features 900 metres of shedding, 4,500 metres of tunnels, and more than 13,000 square metres of growing area. Significant investment in water recycling, solar energy, and sustainable production systems ensures we continue to grow responsibly while maintaining the highest standards of plant quality. Sustainability is woven into everything we do. We utilise approximately six megalitres of recycled water storage, extensive solar infrastructure that offsets around 75% of our energy consumption, recycled pots, and integrated pest management programs using beneficial insects and biological controls. Our goal is simple: to continually improve while working towards complete self-sufficiency in both water and energy. Poplar Grove is proudly NGISA accredited and has been recognised with numerous industry awards for excellence in production, quality, innovation, and customer service. Among our achievements are Best Medium Production Nursery (2011), Best Product Quality (2013), and Best Overall Production Nursery (2014). In 2015, we were honoured to win all five production nursery awards on offer, and we have since been recognised as Best Production Nursery for six consecutive years from 2015 to 2021, and again in 2023. While much has changed since our backyard beginnings, our philosophy remains the same: grow exceptional plants, embrace innovation, and provide retailers and gardeners with varieties that perform beautifully in Australian gardens.
